Head Start is a Federal program for preschool children from low-income families. The Head Start program is operated by the Region IX Education Cooperative and supported by local public schools.

Head Start helps all children succeed and children who attend Head Start participate in a variety of educational activities. Head Start ensures that children will receive free medical and dental care, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing in a safe setting.

Most children in Head Start are between the ages of three and five years old and they are provided with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. Services are also provided to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.

Lincoln County Head Start - Ruidoso is located at the Nob Hill Early Childhood Center. It has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) since 1996. Head Start services are also provided in Capitan, Carrizozo, and Hondo.

The service areas include Early Childhood Education, Health Services (including child health, nutrition, and mental health), Family Services, Parent Involvement, and Services to Children with Disabilities.
