Head Start staff members facilitate
examinations by skilled professionals for any health problems a child
might exhibit. Staff members also arrange for vision and hearing tests
and needed immunizations. Under the supervision of a registered
dietician, staff members provide nutrition assessments on each child
and those with health and nutrition needs receive follow-up care.
Staff members - under the supervision
of a licensed mental health professional - assess the individual needs
of each child. Mental health services are provided to children and
their families if the need exists.
Nutrition activities are an integral
part of the Head Start curriculum. Children receive nutritious meals at
breakfast and lunch and also brush their teeth. They are taught to wash
their hands before meals and encouraged to develop good personal and
health habits.
